Stats time – here are some interesting numbers I’ve run across recently:
• 600 new fast-charging stations came online in the US in the 3rd quarter of 2024.
• There are now about 9,000 public fast-charging sites across America.
• By year’s end there will be roughly 1 fast-charging site for every 10 gas stations.
• At the current pace, fast-charging sites would outnumber gas stations in 8 years.
• Shell has opened 30 new charging stations in the US.
• US Bank added chargers to 39 branches in California.
• Waffle House added chargers to a few restaurants in Florida as a test case.
• North American operators will spend about $6.1 billion on charging infrastructure in 2024, which is roughly double what was spent in 2023.
• In Q1, the average US fast-charging station was plugged into a car 18% of the time (about 5 hours a day). Stations start earning profit at roughly 15% utilization.
• Q3 electric sales were 11% higher than 2023.
• There are now more than 3.5 million EVs registered in the US.
