If you’ve noticed the spiking prices at the pump lately, unfortunately it doesn’t stop at gasoline. Wholesale motor oil prices are rising rapidly, and industry executives are warning of imminent shortages caused by the war with Iran. Here’s what’s happening and what it means for you as a driver.

The Root of the Problem
About 44% of the U.S. supply of Group III base oil — the key ingredient in synthetic motor oil — comes from the Middle East. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has blocked that supply. On top of that, damage to Shell’s Pearl Gas-To-Liquid facility in Qatar from Iranian missile strikes and declarations of “force majeure” by producers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have compounded the crisis. Group III base oil prices in northern Europe have climbed nearly 100% since the outset of the Iran war.

What It Means at the Shop
Local repair shops are already feeling the pinch. One Wisconsin shop owner reported that synthetic motor oil prices have increased 30% within the last few months, with two separate price hikes from suppliers. While some shops are currently absorbing the cost, once their extra supply runs out, consumers will have to pay the difference. Wholesale prices for synthetic and conventional motor oil jumped substantially in May 2026, with suppliers reporting limited stock availability and increased lead times exceeding 6 to 8 weeks for bulk orders.

Should You Panic?
No — but you should be informed. Experts say workarounds will likely be found, but warn that some solutions could potentially damage or compromise the long-term viability of engines.
The bottom line: don’t skip your scheduled oil changes, and don’t wait if you’re due for one soon. If prices continue to rise, staying on top of your maintenance now is the smartest move you can make for your vehicle’s long-term health.
