What ultimately sets Volvo apart is safety, so it is wonderful to see their new flagship vehicle being introduced as the safest Volvo ever, with standard safety equipment that goes way beyond any prior Volvo model. The new EX90 will makes its debut a week from now on November 9th, 2022.
The new EX90 will have an invisible shield of safety, underpinned by use of a lidar system embedded in the SUV’s roof. Lidar stands for laser imaging, detection, and ranging, a system which detects ranges to objects by aiming a pulsed laser at them and measuring the time it takes for the reflected light to return to the unit. The Volvo lidar system can detect a pedestrian up to 820 feet away from the car, and because it doesn’t rely on light like a camera does, it can watch over you both day and night.
Along with the lidar system, the new EX90 will have 8 cameras, 5 radar systems and 16 ultrasonic sensors. Volvo also will be rolling out their driver understanding system, which is an advanced way to monitor the driver and alert them if they are showing signs of tiredness or distraction.
The EX90 will be a full-sized, all-electric SUV, which in and of itself is a big deal. Yet it is great to see how focused Volvo still is on caring for the people who use and interact with their vehicles.
